It's been four years since we last heard from Ron Jarzombek and the boys from Blotted Science; "The Machinations of Dementia" from 2007 was nothing but groundbreaking, the mixture of complexity and brutally tense melodic phrasing, took Ron's previous ventures, both solo and with Spastic Inc to another level.
Even tough Blotted Science does not pop up in conversations about supergroups, these guys are clearly a supergroup - you get Cannibal Corpse's Alex Webster on Bass and Obscura's Hannes Grossmann on drums (replacing Charlie Zeleny from 2007's record). This congregation of highly technically proficient players' efforts results in an eruption of sheer energy and incredible moments of tension and release.
Blotted Science is the primary vehicle for Jarzombek's circle of 12 tones. This new take on musical composition introduces a greater degree of freedom in the way chord progressions are constructed, while maintaining a strong sense of structure. Right from the first listen, it becomes obvious that the construction of the songs is nothing but the regular metal construction - this is probably the reason why it takes the guys so long to release albums, but the result surely is worth the wait.
"The Animation of Entomology" is comprised of four songs, all deeply rooted in typical Blotted Science gory human / insect / alien carnage. All of the music is written exclusively using the 12 tone system, and the theme for this album was "music that syncs up perfectly with clips of disgusting insects and other creepy creatures" as Jarzombek stated in an interview.
The first three tracks are isolated efforts while the last four are part of an opus called "A Sting Operation".From the initial discharge to the final fading synth outro, this release is a blast of high voltage to the listener's neural network - it's strong, always moving and mutating into something bigger and more dangerous.
The music really all over the place; the compositions are not rooted in classical patterns like verses/chorus, but on more experimental and adventurous movements with electrifying melodic lines courtesy of Jarzombek's guitar leads and synthetic canvas. The key factor is breaking the patterns and take the listener on a voyage filled with peaks and valleys - the progression has an almost cinematic quality and it's very easy to imagine these songs as score of some obscure alternative film.
In typical Blotted Science fashion clips for some of the songs are already floating in the Internet. These clearly illustrate the tension of the music and provide an excellent way to understand the emotions that the guys were trying to capture.
If the listener is interested in extraordinary music, with a new approach and tremendous musicianship, this EP is really mandatory. Due to it's short length (25 minutes) it is also highly recomended to every metalhead out there, even tough it will prove too extreme for most.
